General Outdoor Range Rules

Outdoor Range Closures

All outdoor ranges are closed on Easter Sunday.  

All ranges are closed on Saturday until 12:30 PM for work parties.

General Safety Rules

  1. Before handling any firearm, ensure the range is clear and that no one is downrange.
  2. All firearms must be pointed downrange at all times.
  3. Eye and ear protection are required while on the range.
  4. All shooting must be aimed fire. Shooting from the hip or un-aimed fire is prohibited.
  5. Full automatic, burst fire, and bump firing are not allowed.
    • Rapid fire is permitted only when conducted responsibly and with full control of the firearm.
  6. Firearms must remain unloaded until ready to shoot.
    • Bolts and cylinders must be open and magazines removed until positioned on the firing line and ready to engage a target.
  7. An Empty Chamber Indicator (ECI) must be inserted in every firearm when not in use.
    • Weed-whacker cord is provided on the range for this purpose.

Cease Fire Procedures

Calling a Cease Fire

  • Any member may call a cease fire for safety or rule compliance.

When a Cease Fire Is Called

  1. All shooters must immediately unload firearms and make them safe.
  2. The audible siren will be activated and warning lights illuminated.
  3. Once the line is declared safe, all individuals must remain behind the Yellow Safety Line.
  4. Movement beyond the firing line is permitted only after the range is declared safe.
  5. No handling of firearms, magazines, or equipment is allowed during a cease fire.

Returning to Shooting (“Range Hot”)

  1. Thoroughly confirm that no one is downrange.
  2. Turn off the warning lights.
  3. Clearly announce “Range is hot.”

Holsters & Drawing

  1. Holsters must be positioned between the 3:00 and 9:00 positions, facing forward.
  2. Cross-draw holsters are not allowed.
  3. Rearward-facing holsters are prohibited.
  4. Firearm safeties must be engaged while drawing.

Clay Target Use

  1. Clay targets (except thrown targets for sporting clays, skeet, or trap) must not be thrown in ranges other than the skeet, trap and 5-stand fields.
  2. Clay targets may be:
    • Placed on the 100-yard berm face, no higher than 48”, or
    • Positioned so that a proper backstop is provided.

Supervision & Access

  1. When present, the Range Master and assistants are in charge.
    • In their absence, all members present act as temporary range officers.
  2. Junior members must be supervised by a Charter or Associate Member at all times.
  3. Guests may only use the range when accompanied by a Charter or Associate Member.
  4. Only one guest may shoot at a time under direct visual supervision.
    • The supervising member may not shoot while supervising.
  5. Range hours are 9:00 AM to sunset.
    • For lighted ranges only, sunset is defined as 30 minutes prior to dusk, as published by Weather.com.

Range Maintenance & Conduct

  1. Remove and dispose of all targets, stands, and trash when finished shooting.
  2. Clean up spent shell casings after use.
  3. Return all target stands to the designated storage area.
  4. Everyone is responsible for keeping the range clean, safe, and orderly.
  5. Alcohol or drug use is strictly prohibited before or during shooting.
    • No one may handle or operate a firearm after consuming alcohol or drugs.
  6. All federal and state firearm laws must be always obeyed.
